American Graffiti (1973) 21:00-23:20 Wed 10th Jun 2020 140m True Movies

Starring Richard Dreyfuss, Ronny Howard, Paul Le Mat, Charles Martin Smith, Cindy Williams

Showcasing then-Hollywood-newcomers Harrison Ford, Richard Dreyfuss and Ron Howard, director George Lucas weaves together the stories of a disparate group of teenagers as they struggle with adolescent rites of passage in 1962.
Directed by George Lucas

Produced byFrancis Ford Coppola

Budget $777,000; Box office $140 million

Probably the best teen-drama ever made, American Graffiti has so much going for it that it's hard to believe that George Lucas found Studios unreceptive and finance hard to come by. So, made on a shoestring with a bunch of unknowns, the film was released to critical acclaim and immediate obscurity in 1973.

But those who saw the movie, in a few selected theatres, loved it and spread the word. Smelling the money, the studio executives invested in marketing and, soon, American Graffiti was seen nationwide in the US, earning $55 million. The later release worldwide, in 1977, earned another $63 million.

American Graffiti has very little "plot" and some decidely awkward scenes, but who cares when the USA of the early 1960s is faithfully recreated in celluloid with a soundtrack to match and classic cars rumbling down the "strip".

The film made Lucas a millionaire ..... and then came Star Wars .....

This film depicted most accurately life as a teen in the US in some of the smaller towns across the country in the 60's. It is a favorite/classic/icon for most everyone I know.

When we choose to recall some of the best/worst/immediate concerns as a teenager, this is the movie to make us feel good. Even now...
