Writer/producer David E Kelley, of Ally McBeal fame, here turns his hand to a daft creature feature that will tickle fans of Tremors. There's something under the surface of Black Lake that's making monster munch out of visitors, so warden Bill Pullman, palaeontologist Bridget Fonda (Kelley's first choice for the role of Ally McBeal), grumpy sheriff Brendan Gleeson and nutty millionaire Oliver Platt decide to hunt down the critter before any other bits of semi-digested locals pop to the surface. If you fancy something that isn't remotely brain-straining, this perfect popcorn entertainment could be for you.
So, not a great film, not even a good one, but like Tremors, oddly enjoyable, containing "humanity and humour with the occasional gore and fright" .....

Critics are scathing in their dismissal of the movie:

On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film currently holds a 46% based on 93 reviews (43 fresh, and 50 rotten), with an average rating of 5.06 out of 10. The site's critics consensus reads, "Betty White's delightful supporting turn may be worth the price of admission alone, but Lake Placid is swamped by a smarmy script and inability to deliver on the creature feature mayhem."

On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 34 out of 100, based on 25 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews".
Nevertheless, the movie remains hugely popular with a certain type of viewer (myself included) .....
