Re: Say, "No" to Direct Debit

I too pay by DD and like Julie, I like the fact that I know exactly what's to be paid and when. If there's to be any change, every company I deal with has let me know well in advance, so no nasty surprises.

Exactly....some appear to think that DD's are giving someone else carte blanche permission to take what they like when they like from your bank account.

Basically that's exactly what they do.

Of course they are supposed to be able to justify what they take but mistakes get made especially with accounts where the deduction is not a fixed amount like phone bill or electricity bill. You will get the money back eventually if it is taken in error but that might be a small comfort if they empty your bank account in the mean time because of a misplaced decimal point.

Exactly Pats, which is why I've already said that I would NEVER use Direct ddebits. However I do pay my rent by Standing Order. I still retain control over my money but know my bank will pay the landlord without me ever having to remember to do so.

Re: Say, "No" to Direct Debit

One headline grabbing story wil not change my views.

I don't have any problem with my ex-employer paying my pension automatically without asking me first, or the bank paying (miniscule) interest from my savings into my account, and I don't have a problem with paying regular bills by DD.

When you live out in the sticks, it's not always easy to access banks, post office, utility companies etc.. so paying DD is very convenient.

I pay all my bills including the milk man by DD and have never had a problem. It helps me to keep track of spending.
I would hate to have to go back to paying all my bills in person and messing about with cheques and cash.

You don't need to use cash or cheques personally I use Bpay as the cheapest most effective way of paying bills. Your bank account remembers the details for you.

Bruce to do that I think I need a little gadget at home and yet another pin number to remember .

I am happy to leave it to the bank with DD than to involve a third party which allows the possibility of more mistakes...
