Speed limit passing emergency vehicles

From 1st September in NSW the government has introduced legislation that will require motorists to slow down to 40kph when passing stationary emergency vehicles with their red and blue lights flashing.

I am not entirely against this for Fire Trucks and Ambulances BUT what I do object to is that it also applies to a police vehicle who has stopped a motorist for speeding. How is that an emergency?

Can you imagine the chaos on Freeways where the limit is 110kph and a police car has stopped a motorist for speeding (they always leave their lights flashing) everybody has to slow down to 40kph. it is absolutely ridiculous. Even on country roads - imagine slowing from 110kph to 40 kph with a 54m road train up your arse? Badly thought out legislation.

The fine is over $400 and 3 demerit points. Apparently they are trialling it for 12 months - my letter to the minister has already been posted.

I agree.

Over here they leave their lights flashing just to say 'Look at me, I have flashing lights'.

Would that include police attending house calls or is it just motorway (freeway) related?

As I understand it all vehicles with red and blue flashing lights anywhere.

The ironic thing is that this legislation was prompted by a campaign by a bloke who's daughter broke down on the Hume Hwy (a freeway) and she and a towtruck driver were killed when hit by a truck. The NRMA and tow truck operators have been trying to get this legislation in to apply to vehicles with orange flashing lights as well.

I'm just wondering how they will enforce it? Police attending an incident will surely be too busy to notice the speed of passing cars, unless they have to send a second car to monitor traffic. Then if someone gets pulled over for speeding, that's another car with flashing lights, it could go on and on.

That's out of Monty Python.

I agree. It is only common sense to slow down when passing situations like that. Someone could step out or the emergency vehicle may need to exit quickly.
