The speech divide

"It is impossible for an Englishman to open his mouth without making some other Englishman hate or despise him," wrote George Bernard Shaw.

Doe this still ring true ?

When we hear the modulated tones of Jacob Rees Mogg
We know exactly what his background is just from the sound of his voice .
Others are not so easy to place .

Do people still judge others on how they speak ?

Re: The speech divide

Probably, but, the things folks hold as true are minimalizing rapidly, so, it probably don't matter much lately.

I love regional accents. The people in Yorkshire, the Lancashire area, the Manchester area & the Cornish, the Welsh accent & of course the Devon people. Irish & Scottish accent. They all make Great Britain what it is.

Re: The speech divide

When you think of people on BBC television and radio in the 1950’s, they always had a distinctive upper class accent. They would be classed as ‘posh’.
Look at the television and radio now, it’s a collection of regional accents. An upper class accent is quite rare.

Re: The speech divide

I like regional accents - my favourite is the black country accent outside Birmingham, not the city's accent itself though.

I also like a Dundonian accent, they have a strange twang to them.

Re: The speech divide

I love listening to Jacob Rees Mogg ....he sounds so English or what other countries perceive English to be...it's from a bygone age now I think and I'll be honest it wouldn't go down well in Yorkshire

Re: The speech divide

I like posh accents too. Jacob Rees Mogg sounds OK to me. What I don't like are rough sounding accents like Geordie ones.
