Why do we say things the way we do?

Why do we say things the way we do and the order in which we say them?

Like Salt and pepper instead of Pepper and salt

Mustard and Cress instead of Cress and mustard

Salt and Vinegar instead of Vinegar and Salt

Beans on Toast instead of Toast under Beans

Upstairs and Downstairs instead of Downstairs and Upstairs

Anymore you can think of?

History and habit I guess. I often find myself saying odd things and realise it's my nan who used to say it. Lost is the meaning because she got it from her grandmother and she from hers. But there it is travelled all those years into the present.

Exactly Dreamy. I have more cream than strawberries.

The chest x-ray and Ffosse?

Because it rolls off the tongue more easily I guess.

Morecambe and Wise, Lennon and McCartney (although Macca tried to change that a few years ago!).
