You might be right. AFAIK the scam of high phone charge only really kicks into play if you either return the call or click on one of the options if offered via a pre-recorded message.

I am always of the view that if there is a legitimate reason for a company or business to ring you, if you have a phone that has an answer machine on it, they will leave a message. Hence why all my phones have had an answer machine on them.

I have found on very rare occasions that a call is genuine but because no message is left I just ignore it, then a few days later I get a letter in the post explaining such and such has been trying to get in contact with me. My reply back in those situations has always been 'there are too many scams out there, if your call is legitimate then why didn't you leave a message on the answer machine? fault is all yours not mine.'
