Same with dogs, cats and birds, but they know what colours they can see.

Just found this, if it's any use?

" Dogs have more rods than cones in their retina, whereas people have more cones, and this apparently makes the difference in color perception. Humans and a few other primate species are trichromatic, which means they have three kinds of cones. Dogs are dichromatic, and have only two types."

There is also a very extensive finding on horse colour vision here:

Yes, Mups. I was going to quote that too.
I have always wondered how it is known what colours animals can see. It’s not like they can transfer animal eyes into humans to find out?
How would it be known, or can they tell by dissecting an eye?

Without bleating on about colours having certain wavelengths/frequencies as per GCSE physics, it would seem fairly easy to set up experiments to determine whether animals can see those bandwidths of the spectrum (by observing their responses).

Interesting .
The police will have to cautioning their horses for discrimination.
Although I like the colours the reasoning behind it is total baldocks.

As someone who is red/green colour blind, I can confirm that this doesn't mean that one can't actually see reds and greens, but find it hard/impossible to pick out (eg) a red card (of certain "shades") placed on a green surface since it will appear the same colour as the background.

My father wanted to train me in electronics (he was a TV repairman and felt that it would be a useful skill to have). Alas, this failed at the first post since I could not determine the colour of the bands printed on resistor casings (these are a code which identifies the ohmage).

Well - can't answer for other animals - but I have been 'Cat Watching' for best part of 50yrs now - and I know they can not only see colours but even have favourites.

Re: Horses can see colours

Horses eyes being more attuned to movement than to colour makes sense as they have much wider vision.
