Badger Culls

The poor old Badgers again.

Quote:

"Wildlife star Chris Packham is urging the Government to think again after it extended it's badger cull this week - despite pledging to stop destroying the much-loved animals.

"The naturalist, along with the RSPCA have said - "The badger cull is not the anser to stopping the spread of bovine TB.
We have campaingned for years against this cruel and ineffective method. We also owe it to cattle to sort this.
"The longer it takes to develop a cattle vaccination, the more cows will be removed. Their welfare is as much a concern as badger welfare in this sorry state of affairs."

Badgers will now be culled in 11 new areas of England, with up to 70,000 shot this year.

The Government had said it would develop more TB testing and move away from culling.

The RSPCA expert said the badger's role in spreading bovine TB is "vastly overestimated.
"We are calling on ther government to fast track it's improvements to cattle-based measures, along with badger vaccination."

If a third world country can have a compulsory vaccination program
for its dairy cows Mups l dont see why we cant ??
All cows have to have an ear tag specifying when they were last
vaccnated, this in SA!

I know this was from last summers Farmers Weekly, but have a read. It says scientists might have made a break through, but . . .

" At present, the vaccination of cattle against bovine TB is forbidden under international and EU law because it is not possible to distinguish between a Bacille Calmette-Guérin- (BCG) vaccinated and TB-infected cow."

Having read your link Mups it seems that when testing cattle for
TB, It is not possible to tell the difference between an infested cow
and a vaccinated one as the tests are not able to tell what is which?
or which is what if you prefer?
But in Sa, the cows ears are tagged by the vet so no further test
is required to differentiate it from the infected animals??
Perhaps this does not conform to world animal health rules, l dont
know, but it seems to work out there as the milk is also tested and
found to be ok??

One problem Donks is that the TB vaccination causes the cows' immune systems to produce cells ready to fight TB should the cows contract it. These cells get carried over into the milk they produce and can show up in routine testing as TB antigens meaning the milk is unfit for human consumption has to be discarded.

Re: Badger Culls

To me the answer is, to catch the badgers, vaccinate them after testing to see if they do have TB, if not vaccinate then set them free again. If every badger was vaccinated, as my friend did to the ones on her place, at her own expense, then, they could no longer blame badgers for giving cattle TB.
Unfortunately the PTB do not believe in the vaccination for badgers & the sett she had studied for years, over many generations was still culled even though all her badgers were clean. She was heartbroken & traumatized by it. They were like family to her. The cull does not differentiate between healthy badgers or TB infested badgers, it just kills all no matter what.

Yes, a good man ey Tess.

What will they do when they have eventually wiped out every badger to extinction, and the cows still have TB?
What will they blame next?

Deer, squirrels, foxes, even small mammals could spread it. The list could be endless.
