Japan resumes whaling today!

Whaling fleets in Japan restart commercial whaling from
today.
They say they have done this for centuries and their livelyhoods
depend on this practice?
It is true, they have done this for centuries, BUT, in previous
times they used rowing & sailing boats to do this, and the
harpoon was propelled by a mans arm!
Now they use high speed trawlers with explosive harpoons
propelled from a gun!
Once a whale is sighted it has little chance of survival!
Perhaps if they wish to continue with this totally uneccassary
practise, they should be compelled by international law to
revert to rowing boats and lances again, this would give the
Whales a fair chance and would introduce an element of
risk to the hunters, which imo should make it more enjoyable
fot them, and might even give the whales a chance to strike
back!
As regards their livelyhoods, they have not been able to
pursue them for at least 50yrs so they have been doing
something else for this time?
Maybe uk could buy all the whalers to use as patrol vessels
we should be able to get them for a good price and it
should not take much to modify them?

Re: Japan resumes whaling today!

The fact that the human population has increased drastically over the last centuries might just impact on the number of whales killed. If they are keeping it within low regulated numbers, the cost of meat and bi-products will soar . If they have free reign , well our wildlife in the oceans will not have a second chance to recover so easily now.

It makes me mad, such huge beautiful creatures are chopped to bits . for what ?

To see the slaughter in the Faroe Isles is very distressing, and then to see many of them dead, just flung back into the sea for one reason of another is even more distressing.

I find it difficult to comment on things like this as we as a nation slaughter so many animals and is one animal worth more than another ? Either we accept all animals can be slaughtered or none I can't see us with bloody hands can really judge others.

Apparently PD, they will resume full time whaling again but
only in vtheir home waters. They will respect the rules of the
international community regarding the antartic and elsewhere?
I dont know how far their fishing waters stretch, but the
Pacific is a big place?

Yes l agree Julie, but l think whales are a special case as
they were previously hunted almost to extinction before the
ban! Whereas the domestic animals we slaughter now will
never become extinct, and are supposed to be killed and
kept in a humane manner as opposed to whales where there
are no rules to control how they are hunted and killed!

Did they ever stop whaling? As far as I understood they have been killing a thousand Minke whales every year "in the name of research" !

Thats true Barry, its just an excuse to continue!
Norway is guilty also, the research bshould be studying them
and their habits etc, not in how they taste?

Re: Japan resumes whaling today!

Japan quit the International Whaling Commission last December.

On the bright side they are no longer whaling in the Southern Ocean and no longer continuing the farce of 'research'. They are only whaling in Japanese waters.

On the downside they are still whaling and have been for a couple of months.

It will be interesting to see if Sea Shepherd follows them into Japanese waters

Yes Brucy they are no longer in the southern ocean region,
But Norway has balso srarted whaling again, presumably in
the artic regions, so whaling has taken a big step forward,( if
that can be called forward ) so whales will definitely be coming
under pressure again!
How can bwe bring bpressure on these two nations to change
their attitude to this subject?
I have a feeling that other nations will also be going down the
same route??
