Opression

Are the Russian being oppressed by the authorities, I actually thought that they were beginning to get democracy after the Yeltsin era, but it appears not.
Could there be a possibly of another revolution there?

Re: Opression

Do you believe we are a democracy here in GB? In Russia all that I see is a bunch of low life that have acted in a disgusting manner and are now facing the consequences.

Look, there's a huge difference between a democracy and anarchy. Democracy doesn't mean "do as you will", it menas laws based on the will of the majority.

Based on that do you still we are a democracy here in GB?

I don't.

Russia's doing OK.

Re: Opression

Hi Wrinkly
It probably depends on ones take on democracy, maybe all regimes are only democratic to a point, it depends where the bar is set. as witnessed of late, the alternative to opression is usually anarchy.

Re: Opression

At least anarchy and dissent in Russia make the news these days, and the dissenters only got 2 years rather than life in the Gulag, so something has improved in the last few years...

You have a good point there Barry, in the old days nothing reached the outside, not even natural disasters.

Re: Opression

There's something very suspicious about the way Putin stole the election and jailing an insignificant girl rock back for dissent reeks of the old Soviet era tactics.
It seems to me that the USSR and subsequently Russia haven't had a truly good leader since 1917 with the exception of Gorbachev. Yeltsin was a good joke though.

That is probably more to do with technology than openness
things can't be hushed up so easily these days since the arrival of social media..
