Why are they called a pair of Tights

Why is it called a pair of Tights, I can understand a pair of socks or a pair of stockings, but tights are one unit.

It's been decades since any type of nylon has touched my legs! I'm past all that dressing up nonsense. Trousers, socks and shoes, that's me.

And the tops, of course.
