The various parties select members for the list. You get two votes the second one for a party.

Re: A seachange to our democracy

Perhaps we could do something completely different and dispense with all the political parties and just have independent representatives for each area and fewer MPs. The independent representatives would state their views on set topics and people could vote on those .

Once elected the MPs could put themselves forward to represent a sector eg health, defense, the economy etc with a certain quota for each. The sector MPs would individually formulate and propose a number of policies on which all the MPs would vote.

Not quite sure who would be in charge or how we could arrive at a Prime Minister Most PMs are just a figurehead anyway with advisors formulating policy and speech writers deciding what is said.

I agree with the original post, though i feel the gruesome twosome tory, and labour, l prefer the current setup. While we are at it abolish the House of Lords and replace it with elected members

I think a better system would be a preferential system but I suspect that it would have to be an optional preferential system to get the support of the major parties. It is a much fairer system and no vote is wasted.

However proportional representation would be perfect for an upper house vote (when Britain finally decides to become a democracy)

Does 5 for the "Australian Sex Party" mean they put near the top of their preferences or the bottom ?

'1' is the first preference so '5' would be near the bottom depending on how many candidates. However if you vote 'below the line' on the Senate paper then you might be numbering into the 70s

Discussed this morning on the radio, of the new intake for the Tories only one went to a public school most described as pinstripe professionals.

Wonder what the demographic for the other parties is ?
