Re: Sciatica

So Sarah darlin' since I've been there, done that and bought the 'T' shirt, when do you start down the same route??? - make appointment with your GP and get a referral to local Hospital to see Orthopaedic Consultant Surgeon.

It will take some weeks for that to happen, then the Surgeon will want to see a series of X-rays, and even if accepted for replacement surgery, you still have to go on the 'waiting list'. Unlikely you'll get surgery before Next Spring.

Les - I too have this problem to contend with, have tried many remedies and the one thing that actually helps is a 'pain gone pen'. Better to get someone to do the pen for you - to the lower side of your spine. It also works well for neck pain, used on back of the neck. The 'pain gone pen' is great value on Amazon. No batteries, can easily be carried, hand held, no wires. I use the pen several times a day as I am unable to tolerate painkillers. Do this Les, before you go to bed and you will have pain releif I'm sure.

Re: Sciatica

I have had lower lumber discs and osteoarthritis for years and sciatica nerve in my left leg. Regular over the counter meds. don't help. Have been going to a specialist and he gives me shots in the lower part of my spine and has done wonders for the pain in that part of my body. The shots last 5-6 weeks and then I can return. He is now going to measure me for a waist brace and I hope to God this will relieve me for a much longer time. I also get a shot in my shoulder for the right arm (arthritis) and it lasts the same amount of time--but --decided to have an operation and the pain is gone. Physical therapy, has helped, walk the tread mill, do floor exercises and stretching, apply ice packs and or hot packs, also muscle relaxants (prescription) do help. The big cure (prescription) is VICODIN...3 times a day. I offer this only if you can do it. Good luck

Re: Sciatica

I have sciatica off and on. A friend who is a retired physiotherapist told me to do the exercise where you lie on the floor and swing both legs together over to the opposite side of your body, 10 times on each side and I find that does help. I also take ibuprofen but I don't have really severe pain as yet. I also find regular walking helps. Very useful website here:

Doctors are finding it in many older people these days regardless of how they eat because as we get older the kidneys don't convert it. Same if you are overweight. You may have it without knowing and it has connections with dementia and muscle pain.

My partner's GP found he has need of regular B12 injections. This is something else that GPs didn't know about older people in the past.

Relying on eating well is fine for most people but not everyone.

Re: Sciatica

I get sciatica and was told to use this exercise - it works!!
Stand facing the wall or a closed door. Put your hands on the wall and stand far enough away so that you can bring up your knee towards your chest. Do this slowly to the count of five. Bring the knee up as far as you can and hold it, again to the count of five, then slowly take the leg down and slowly swing it out to the back of you - as far as is comfortable, to the count of five, hold it, count to five and then take your foot to the floor. Do this about four or five times then rest. You need to do the exercise every hour or so and you will find ( well I did ) that in a day or so you will be a lot better. I do this as soon as I feel the sciatica coming on.
Another exercise is to lie in the bath and try to push your heel away from you, keeping your leg straight. That is also very good.
Hope this is helpful to you.

Barbara darlin' Hi and welcome to the forum. The exercise you describe is similar to the ones recommended (enforced) by the physio-terrorists for those who (like me) have had hip and knee replacements. However they add side-ways movements too.
