Interest rates are at almost 0% as well so just using the inflation rate is not giving the most accurate overview. I would say it is more likely to be interest rates that drive wage increases than inflation. Plus, fuel duty is frozen and the personal tax allowance went up in 2020 which helps to counter the inflation increase.

Re: 1% wage rise for NHS!!

I suppose the lack of any industrial relations system in the UK means that you have no accurate statistics or fair way of determining wages.

For example in Australia the CPI (Consumer Price Index) for the 2020 year was 0.9%. This is well below the Reserve Bank's target of annual inflation between 2% and 3%

The WPI (Wage Price Index) was 1.4% so wage earners are only just keeping ahead of inflation. Wages are all adjusted for inflation by the Annual Wage Review conducted by the Fair Work Commission in the second half of the year. The commission also hears submissions from employer bodies, Unions and government during this process. This is separate to individual award and enterprise agreement adjustments

There should be no wage increases unless it is self financed by increased productivity or changes in the employment market.

That is what enterprise agreements/bargaining does (subject to the Fair Work Act’s better-off-overall test).

The National Wage case just ensures that all workers are not worse off due to inflation, changes to taxation or legislative changes etc, their determination applies to all awards and wages nation wide.

It is also important for pensioners because the Australian pension is a proportion of the average male wage and is indexed every 6 months.

Forget all the 'accountant speak'. They have put their lives on the line for over a year, many have died because of it and they have worked bloody hard. They deserve a reward.
