Tom Cruise plays Jack Reacher because he bought the rights not because he is the obvious person in the role. Apparently, Lee Child is perfectly happy with his casting but money does talk.I haven't counted but I have probably read all the Jack Reacher books and enjoyed nearly all of them. The person who always appears in my mind's eye to play him, assuming he is big enough and can do an American accent, is Jason Statham.

Yes, I've just about read them all too. I never rated Jason Statham as an actor, but now I quite like him. Yes I think he could get away with being Reacher.
I've mulled over who could play him. One was David Morse. He's played tough guys plus he's tall 6'4"

Having watched Rock of ages with Cruises OTT performance as a rock star it was quite hard to see him a few days later as Jack Reacher.Although I admired his strutting and singing in Rock (and yes it was him) it somewhat interfered with the more serious Reacher role. I kept waiting for him to rip his shirt off and do one as they say .
