Secrets of the Castle
Anyone else watching this series on the Yesterday Channel?
It's a fascinating insight of how castles were built in the 13-14 hundreds. A team of archaeologists, designers and craftsmen are building a new castle from scratch using original mediaeval techniques of making stone blocks for the castle walls, mortar for fixing them in place and constructions of wood using wooden pegs to secure them in place (metal nails were expensive). They've also constructed a type of squirrel cage winch to hoist the heavy stone blocks to the top of the castle walls.
Also being shown is how the craftsmen and labourers of old built houses for them to live in for the duration of the building of the castle, what their diet was and how weapons were constructed to defend the castle. As a history buff, I find this type of programme very interesting.
