Sparrows

Up very early this morning, has a lovely waste of time stock still by the kitchen window watching a flock of sparrows plucking up the courage to hop down to a dish of water I'd put out for the birds.

Eventually they did! One after the other, with me motionless looking through the window.

Then they moved onto the bird bath, and had a splash.

Probably about eight all together.

One, probably mum or dad, making all the decisions, albeit after lots of thought and weighing up the dangers.

I reckon they knew I was there, behind the glass and the Venetian blind, but as long as I kept still, they were eventually confident enough to flutter down and have a drink. Dip sip, dip sip, dip sip.

Re: Sparrows

Do you know come to think of it I rarely see sparrows round here. It's all magpies and wood pigeons. I would have liked to have seen that through your window, birds are wonderful creatures

It's very strange, but over the last 20-25 years, there have been dire warnings about dwindling sparrow numbers, but by me, they have always been quite prolific!

Maybe it's because so many houses nearby have large hedges and bushes which serve as great homes for sparrows. I don't know.
Plus my garden is a bit overgrown at the moment, with a few rampant shrubs and beech hedging, so I expect that helps.

Let's face it, if there is just a lawn and not much else, there isn't going to be a lot of wildlife!

Re: Sparrows

Totally agree .
There is a movement for greening gardens .
Less lawn more bushes etc to make them more wildlife friendly .less pesticides more bees
Less fences more ways for hedgehogs etc to get in and out.

Too much lawn descourages little birds they have to fly across a space which leaves them vulnerable to attack .

Look at golf courses sterile places with few birds or wildlife .
