Do dogs really poo facing North?

Been reading this today and there seems to be a lot about it on the internet. It seems that experts think that dogs are able to detect the Earths magnetic poles and prefer to poo when in line with a North/ South axis. The reason they turn around and around is to find the preferred direction.

Apparently, this can also apply to cats.

Have any of you dog or cat owners known this to be true?

Hadn't really thought about it. I think ours does most of the time. Coincidence maybe.

I have to say that our cats nearly always face North in the litter tray but that could be because the tray faces North.

When we walk up The Rig we usually go north and that's the way he usually faces for his first faeces.

Do you think that is why they call it "animal magnetism"?
