Burton-on-Trent..... that's where my paternal side of the family emigrated from back in the late 1800s!! Small world.
Seeing this thread reminded me about an Ipad my brother bought my mum for Christmas last year. She didn't want one but he wanted her to have one. My mum was 82 then and had never shown any interest in computers etc. We all told him it wasn't a good idea but he wanted to do it. Anyhow she hated it and all the family kept asking to see it and she wouldn't show them and hid it in the wardrobe and I think its been there ever since. What a waste

Re: old versus new (laptop vs ipad)

As for me, early this year I bought a laptop for myself, finished up with a wi fi mouse to run it and then gave it to my daughter, I found I was spending too much time on there, whereas on the tower I have to go to my spare room which has no distractions, I am happy to be with what I am most comfortable with.

Re: old versus new (laptop vs ipad)

Aitch, I do not have an iPad so maybe I should go and buy one so that I will know what I am talking about.

First of all, do not be afraid of any new technology because computers, iPad etc are stupid machines, they only tell you what they have been told, they are like gossiping people.

Second, before trying to use the gadget fully learn what it can do and how it works. Manuals are the best place to start learning about something followed by the internet.
Any term you do not understand type it into Google and there is your explaination.

I just watched this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YvCr1UMxkA and it helped me slightly.

The biggest stumbling block for your brother is his own attitude to wanting to know about it. Most people faced with a computer for the first time think it is to complicated for them and if they carry that feeling into how they use it then the computer is no more than a pencil and paper.

If you look at one thing first and get to know how that works before moving on to another part then it is simple to learn, like a child learns to walk, one step at a time.

Maybe these will help.

Now, Mmmmm, where can I get an iPad fast?

Re: old versus new (laptop vs ipad)

Antibrown, one of the problems with my brother is, he can not access the Internet, and as for reading the manual, you have to download it from the Internet, and if you dont know how to get on there, well that's the catch 22 question, and as I said earlier, the manual is 198 pages long, I am not afraid of technology, but my bro is a complete novice, why his daughter didnt get him an ordinary laptop to start with I dont know, well we will have to see what happens, another thing with my brother is, he has a very short fuse, if you get my drift.

Eileen, I'll bet you wonder how ever you managed without a computer now I know a lady who's 92 and loves her computer and has recently upgraded to one of the touch screen types.

I can't help unfortunately, but the best advice is to find a helpful twelve year old who will no doubt know everything...

I don't like using the pad thingy on laptops and have bought a little wireless mouse for my laptop and it makes a world of difference. I don't think I will buy another desktop now. I can watch telly while I mess about on my laptop (and drive my OH mad in the process)
