I think you have been given faulty instructions on your bin ??

I agree with you, Donkeyman.

Where I live, food waste is put in an entirely separate bin to green waste.
Any unusable food scraps I have is dropped into a small recycleable 'caddy bag', then put in a special bin provided by the council just for food only.

Garden waste goes into a big wheelie bin.

I am thinking Dex ought to check with his council as maybe they forgot his caddy bin?
Dex, have the neighbours got a food bin do you know?

Re: Rancid wheelie bin

We have a caddy bin, which we don't use. Food is put into the green bin alng with garden waste, as per instructions from the council. We don't bother with the compostable bags as they tend to fall apart anyway.

Seems they only issue one bin for free.

Possibly it depends on your local council though? Best to enquire.
I think we get them free but they just deliver them to the wrong property.

Who remembers the good old days when it all went in the same bin and the dust(persons) were allowed to lift it.

There used to be IZAL Bin Powder and it might still be available. I give our wheelies a deep clean by using hot water and bio laundry liquid mixed as a strong solution, then left until barely tepid before a good scrup with a deck scrubber .. it always works for me

I am amazed that your council do that, Dex.
Down here that would not be allowed.

If the suggestions made by others don't work, I suppose the last resort is the professionals. That's all I can think of for you:

Re: Rancid wheelie bin

Everything that does in out food bin is wrapped in newspaper first. Our big black wheelie bin stays fairly clean as everything that goes in it is put in black disposable sacks first. After every collection I put a drop of bleach in the bins for freshness.
