Re: W10 - System Restore Switched off?

I hadn't noticed that system restore is no longer switched on by default. It's unlike Microsoft to remove anything useful (is there a sarcasm smilie?)

It's ON now.

I received an update from microsoft just the other day, and when I checked, my system had had a restore point set for just before the update.....

I recently had a look at a friend's computer. There were 29 gigabytes-worth of restore points. I removed them as part of a PrivaZer general clean-up.

Yes, Computers need regular maintenance.

As you point out, if the fluff files are not cleaned out the PC will get ever slower and slower as the storage space gets eaten up.

PrivaZer helps quite a lot.

Also, System Restore is not a perfect solution to all problems but it does give us back the contents of the system registry so that, in many instances you can, very quickly, be back up and running (as you were on the day you made the Restore File)

It was originally called a "snapshot".

Backing up of personal data files, etc., is down to the user.

As Judd has pointed out, creating a full clone ( or system image) of the hard drive is better still. (keep the copy safe & off the PC! - ransomware can jump drives, if connected))

I clone mine, once a month, using easus.

There could still be a month of updates to get back and maybe quite a few emails, but nothing like the other outcomes of a crashed/hacked system.

Re: W10 - System Restore Switched off?

I have a windows 8 HP laptop upgraded to windows 10. Just had an update which lasted for 2 hours and 50 minutes. Everything looks to be working okay.

Wow!

Which update was it, scot?

Also, out of interest, how much Hard Drive space have you got? What size Memory?

Did your PC hang up doing, apparently, nothing, for a while?

I don't know much of the tech side Ted. I looked up storage (C) drive. It says 446GB, 53GB used and 393 free. I don't know which update it was. Like someone else who posted earlier I have nothing important stored on my laptop.

Well, the Hard drive sounds like a 500GB one, and 393GB free should be plenty.

Hopefully you are 64 bit and have 2GB of Ram?

If you want to know what specs your PC has, I'd download a small free App called "Belarc Advisor". This surveys your PC and tells you all the specs, apps, and whatever.

It, about, 4 pages, if you print it.

Great scot!, assuming you have 2 GB Ram you're good to go and the slowness must be down to either the Internet or the actual update.

Wonder if anyone else is seeing it with that update?
