Ain't - what is its origin?

Was singing some songs to meself today and realised 'ain't' is used in a lot of them such as 'Ain't Misbehaving' - Ain't no sunshine' etc .......
Then I realised its a strange little word, where does it come from I thought, sort of got an answer to what it means - well I knew that - but not a definitive answer.
Strange little word - ain't it

I often wondered that meself Patsy, it's not from "I'm not, I am not going to the ball" I ain't going and that's it, where does it come from indeed, is it American? it ain't necessarily so, I find I'm using it a lot since I came here.
