'Where is Priti Patel?'

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...nferences.html

Downing Street is under growing pressure to explain the continued absence of Priti Patel from the government's daily coronavirus press conferences.

They have been running since March 16 and have seen numerous senior ministers drafted in to update the nation on the latest in the fight against the deadly disease.

But the Home Secretary is yet to participate despite holding one of the UK's four great offices of state.
Allies of Ms Patel today insisted she is '100 per cent engaged' in the government's response to the outbreak and continues to work in the Home Office 'pretty much every day'.

Questions over why Ms Patel has not chaired one of the daily briefings came as she was embroiled in a furious row with MPs over when she will answer questions in front of the Home Affairs Select Committee.

She is said to have turned down four invitations to appear in front of the committee since January.
Ms Patel has now committed to giving evidence before the end of the month but committee chairman Yvette Cooper is adamant the session must take place on April 15.

The Home Secretary has had a noticeably reduced public role in recent months after she faced a series of bullying allegations earlier this year.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Home_Secretary

Her Majesty's Principal Secretary of State for the Home Department, normally referred to as the Home Secretary, is head of the Home Office and a senior Cabinet minister in Her Majesty's Government. It is a high profile position, one of the four Great Offices of State, and is considered one of the most prestigious and important roles in the British Cabinet.

The Home Secretary is responsible for the internal affairs of England and Wales, and for immigration and citizenship for the United Kingdom. The remit of the Home Office also includes policing in England and Wales and matters of national security, as the Security Service (MI5) is directly accountable to the Home Secretary.
So what is she doing in the current crisis, where the police force is one of those public services experiencing unprecedented demand under exceptional circumstances .....

Re: 'Where is Priti Patel?'

She must have heard the question - she's back:

Priti Patel has spoken publicly for the first time since the beginning of the coronavirus crisis to urge police to use common sense when enforcing restriction measures.

The Home Secretary has said police checking supermarket trolleys is ‘not appropriate’ after a chief constable threatened to implement the measure to police the coronavirus regulations.

Speaking to Talk Radio about the remarks, the Home Secretary said: ‘That’s not appropriate, let me be clear about that. That is not the guidance, that is not down to the measures we’ve been adopting thus far.’

Ms Patel insisted she was ‘absolutely not’ considering tougher coronavirus lockdown conditions.
Not exactly an appearance, though .....

I'm not sure why you think she needs to be seen, as long as she is doing her job in the background. Really, I would have thought, it's the Health Minister or the PM's place (or 2ic if not available) to hold the press conferences who are surely the best informed and best placed to do so?

It's not just me - it's the media in general, noting that one of the four most powerful government ministers in the UK is distinguishing herself by her absence from the public gaze.

Dominic Raab (Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs) is set to hold today's press conference.

A number of other cabinet ministers have stood in for Mr Johnson, including Rishi Sunak (Chancellor of the Exchequer ), Michael Gove (Minister for the Cabinet Office), Matt Hancock (Secretary of State for Health and Social Care) and Robert Jenrick (Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government).

My guess is to avoid letting that toxic creature Cooper continue to try to make political capital when PP is up to her gunwales dealing with the highly contentious issues associated with what should be seen as house arrest.
