Would you live in Norway?

Read a interesting article yesterday about Norway.

They have been deciding whether to give every
resident of Norway 800euros each month and stop all
benefits.

This would work out about £575 a month. It would
cost Norway 52.2billion euros a year

I wonder how much it would cost us here in the UK?

It doesn't state whether or not you could keep your
private pension or how you paid for your rent etc.

Being cheeky I cant see many of our Government
living on that, can you

Not sure that would cover rents etc!
Seems a bit daft to give it to the wealthy too!

This was on the radio yesterday, apparently its been trialled in other countries, and it has had some success. Devil would be in the detail.

Re: Would you live in Norway?

I heard this idea a while ago it is IMO very interesting and could be made to work if the will was there.

It replaces all benefits and state pension. Anything you earn on top of that is yours and you pay tax on it. Obviously the tax is slightly more and you may reach an earned figure that wipes out the benefit you have been paid.

It is set at a rate that should pay for everything for a basic no luxury life but here it would be more than there as our rents are higher.

It would be far simpler to administer so some cost for it would come from savings from that.

No one would be homeless if they used the benefit as it is intended.
It wouldn't eradicate the poor as obviously some people's priorities are skewed but it would highlight who needed help to budget etc and IMO is a great idea.

That's what I read, too, Malcolm.
Norway is quite a different kettle of fish. The cost of living and rental costs are high there, much higher than UK, so 800 euros wouldn't go far.
Given Norway's attitude to work and Benefits, I'd be surprised if it was being considered there.
