If you like, technically speaking, you can, of course, use a knife and try slicing them but you won't get real slices and that is because, as I said, fresh German dumplings are not as firm as Bohemian ones which can be and are usually sliced and served that way. (see pic of Czech dumplings aka Bohemian Knedl) Try doing that with our freshly made dumplings and you'll see that they can't be sliced in the same way because they are typically softer and and has a looser consistency. Only if you allow them to cool down and store them for a day, they solidify and can then be sliced, too. (I was comparing German and Bohemian dumplings because one member wasn't sure if they are the same.)

UPDATE
I'm not too crazy about the lack of flavor in most of the recipes on the WEB. When you think about it, what flavor do mashed potatoes, minus butter/cream, have ??? Or plain breadcrumbs have. Plain eggs ? NOPE
So, I am currently playing around with ground up FLAVORED croutons. And adding those to the mashed potatoes.
