The colour purple

Hands up!! who wears purple

I love this poem, so thought I would share it with you

Warning

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

Re: The colour purple

I love that poem! I`ve been wearing purple most of my life, though and my youth was nowhere near sober, in any sense of the word. Maybe I was practising?
And yes, I swear and rattle the railings and embarrass my family - why not?

here`s a poem back to you-

Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on that sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Re: The colour purple

It's one of my favourites but I don't think I'm old enough to be that disgraceful yet! And I don't tend to go for purple as a colour for clothes

You`re never too young to embarrass the grown-ups!

Re: The colour purple

My favourite colour is purple and all shades of it-my bathroom is lavender and white-my bath towels are the same colour (lavender) and most of the plants in my garden are the same. I love burning scented candles but they must be purple/lavender. Also left instructions that I want small posy of flowers on top of my coffin and they must be purple and white. Reading this back-I think I've got a serious obsession with the colour purple .....worrying!

Re: The colour purple

Purple was always considered to be an "immature" colour, wasn't it? Can't say it's my favourite colour, but I do like it (I really like all colours) - it's how you wear it that counts. Personally, I prefer a sort of mulberry/damson shade now; but I did wear purple Loons in my younger days!
