Re: Are our intellectuals revolting??

Yep Ted, but, the sell out of industry over the past four or so decades would have left the practically trained folks with nowhere to go, that's why we are in bad shite with this Covid. Industry by and large can separate workers and keep an economy ticking over, not so with a service based economy, a danger no one could have predicted a few years back.

Yes, and the Brit economy is heavily service sector biased. The GDP pre the Chinese Plague was over 80% service sector.

Be careful about the GDP though especially because so much of it in the case of the UK is in the banking and insurance sector and the spin off into the domestic sector.

The problems apart from anything else are the costs. Ram material transport costs, finished goods transport costs, taxes as a result of EU membership though come Dec 31 that ends, or should, labour costs, so to cut to the chase the costs of production and of course competition means that we would have nothing to take to market.

Maybe Maggie was right Todgy?
Dump all real exports ,
Sell off what we can and invest he proceeds into the finance sector?
Install computers in the finance sector and fire most of the staff?
Thus removing most of the labour and union costs?
Pay a few executives massive salaries and bonuses to keep them
onside?
And let the algorythms do the work??
Am l only dreaming?( Who sang that?).

And then, and only then, put the citizens on a minimum universal
wage with unlimited credit facilities an cheeeep travel so the
citizens believe they are living in heaven!
And what have you got???
l leave others to tell me that??

Are our intellectuals revolting ?
No but they are pretty darn stupid .
This stupid woman ( the vice Chancellor) has just downgraded a degree from Oxford .
Let’s hope her students have more common sense .

The vice-chancellor of Oxford University, Professor Louise Richardson, says students affected by the brutality of the murder of George Floyd can apply for ‘mitigating circumstances’ if they feel it has affected their performance in exams.

His death has been traumatic for many, but using it as an excuse for poor academic performance is not only insulting to his memory, it also further undermines confidence in this once-great institution. “
