I couldn't agree more. Dame Vera should mean more to us than a Nike shop.

Sorry to hear about your friend. It must be horrible not being able to go to the funeral.

'We'll meet again' never fails to bring a tear to my eye I don't mind admitting but hearing it yesterday was really, really sad.

Re: RIP Dame Vera Lynn

She did so much to raise morale during the war, travelling to places like Burma to visit the troops and bring a little bit of home to them, she was a national hero and if anyone deserves a statue, it’s her...rip Vera.

That's for sure Ripple she was a real sweetheart and she never changed did she....a true star. Watching clips of her singing yesterday brought a lump to my throat and I wasn't even around during the war.....it must have been really emotional for those who were.

Her work did not end when the war was over – throughout her life, she remained an indefatigable and outspoken supporter of military veterans, through to their old age.

Dame Vera supported many charities and was a stalwart of several ex-servicemen’s organisations, and in 1991, she played a key part in forcing the government to end the anomaly under which a war widow who lost her husband after 1973 received a far higher pension than a widow of a soldier who died before that date.

To most servicemen she was their Queen, adored, respected and someone they would have laid down their lives for without a doubt.

The old girl is barely cold and the arsehole Grauniad `newspaper` is having a go at her and what she stood for.

Ah, but there is always good news................

With advertising revenues plummeting, the Guardian risks losing a major source of its funding. More than ever before, we’re reliant on financial support from readers to fill the gap. Your support keeps us independent, open, and means we can maintain our high quality reporting – investigating, disentangling and interrogating.

Every reader contribution, however big or small, is so valuable for our future. Support the Guardian from as little as £1

I might just have a 2p piece somewhere!!
