The Problem with the Civil Service.

Hi

I was one, so can comment from the inside.

It is a Club, much like Politics.

You need to go to the right school and University, you need to be part of the system.

You need to say the right things to your Political Masters.

They have big egos which they do not like deflating.

There is no attempt at efficiency.

One glorious example is pay grades.

I have no contacts and was definitely not part of the right set.

My first promotion was to Principal Officer Grade 1.

I was quite happy in my small office with a formica desk , one set of drawers and a swivel chair with no arms.

Nope, it was changed straight away.

I got a bigger desk, real wood and a new chair with arms.

I didn't want it, but had no choice.

That is the system.

It is bananas.

It gets worse as you get further up..

It is a complete nonsense.

60% of your pay is related to the number of people who work for you.

There is no incentive to make things more efficient.

It is a dinosaur, you would not believe how much trouble I got into by suggesting there was no need to swan off to Brussels once a week for a meeting.

It could have been done over the internet.

Thanks for confirming what l had only heard before Swimmy or
seen in TV comedies?
It would only be funny if it wasnt so true?
Can we ever change it? It seems to be a self perperuating, self
inflating ever growing organism that exists only for the sake of
existing, with no real purpose? How can such a thing be killed??
What do you think its weak spots are??

A slightly lesser version of what happens with the EU every month, I believe it is, when the whole shebang is packed up, moved and then all packed up again only to be returned to where it originally came from?

All that just about makes for similar nonsense when the comparisons are made.

Exactly BAZ!
A very good comparison!
So did we give the disease to the EU or
Did they give it to us??

I will leave that to you to work out, it shouldn't be difficult.

Swimmy - sounds like a slightly superior version to what I was told happens in the admin side of County Councils.

Just think of how much money COULD be saved if someone bit the bullet and introduced LEAN Office working techniques into the CS. One thing's for sure, the unemployment rate would shoot up virtually over night.

That could be a big problem Percy?
But not one that should not be faced imo?

Could be, could be but I rather think the smaller organisation may well have caught it from the larger one!

To that I will add it also helps if your father served WWII in special ops and left military service with a well defined record.
I know that must be considered because it was always mentioned at each upward movement.
I will also add that if enough years are served, the linked pension can be as high as half of the best of last three years served and that cannot be sniffed at.
