Posh Notebooks

See if you can follow this -

When I retired I took up knife making
That meant that I started making the sheaths
I started looking at videos on YT about making sheaths, and learherworking techniques, then moved on to leather items more generally

One of the videos was on how to make a cover for a Midori Notebook
Well, I'd never heard of them, so a bit of Searching & Surfing revealed that there is a whole host of these sort of loose leaf notebooks, similar to the Filofax - do you remember those from a few years ago?
They're still going, but seem to have fallen out of fashion

The brands of these notebooks include Midori; Moleskine; Field Notes; Scout; and Scully
They're all similar - a cover fitted with elasticated cord to hold the page inserts
Leather covers are quite expensive, at around £40, though presumably you can get cheaper versions & copies
I get the impression they are currently very trendy, so all those hipsters can go exploring the streets of Islington and pretend they're Indiana Jones

So I wonder; do they have any real advantage over my 99p diary from a bargain store, or is it a case of a large dose of The Emperor's New Clothes?

Re: Posh Notebooks

Interesting. Do you make handles for woodcarving knives also?

A fancy journal makes daily journal writing seem much more pleasant and personable while writing. Sure a regular journal at the dollar store will do the trick but to many people, journal writing is sacred so they want something more note worthy. A beautiful well made journal is a pleasure to write in whereas the plain journal, less so.

Having said that, journaling in a plain ordinary book is better than not journaling at all, in my opinion.

It's what's inside the diary that counts. So..Emperor's new clothes.

As with any hobby or craft you can get as involved as you want
Some people make their own blades, but you have to be fairly keen to do that
I buy ready made blades and fit my own handles, and make my own sheaths

Search YouTube for knife making; knife handles; knife sheaths
The suppliers I use are -

www.moonrakerknives.co.uk
www.english-handmade-knives.co.uk
www.brisa.fi

In USA I know of Texas Knifemakers Supply; no doubt there will be others in USA and Canada

As far as woodcarving knives go I don't make handles for those for a couple of reasons -

I don't do woodcarving myself, so I have no need to make the knives; though I probably could if I wanted to

There are already plenty of woodcarving knives & palm chisels avaiable from makers such as Pfiel, Kirschen, Mora, Flexcut, Beaver Craft, Stubai and others

Probably because wood carving is a bit specialised, there are not many bare blades (just the blade without a handle) available.
You can get a few small whittling style blades and spoon carving blades, but not the small and specialised shapes for wood carving
People who want to make their own wood carving knives tend to make the blades from odds & ends like drill bits, hacksaw blades, old knife blades, chisels, and so on

If you want a particularly shaped or contoured handle you could do that, or break up an existing knife then fit your own handle

As with most things, you can find appropriate videos on YouTube. Search for 'making wood carving knives'

Re: Posh Notebooks

The trouble with very posh notebooks is that they can be too beautiful to sully with random jottings, particularly if you have to cross things out.

I think for general journal books, a more medium quality is preferable, so you can jot away and not mind the odd blotch or mistake.

I do have a couple of nicely bound blank books, but they are still that.....blank!

Wow. That was good. My husbands made some carving knives but I haven’t. I do what you suggested and purchased some flexi cut knives as well as pfeil and Mora for woodcarving and some great chisels for woodturning which I do.

You are right though that people make knives & chisels from different metals and other tools. Many people use old screwdrivers to use for chisels . We have a few blade and chisel sharpeners .
That’s a skill in itself. Thank you so much for this extensive answer. It’s excellent.
