Poppies

For years I have had pink poppies in my garden, but this year they are scarlet.
Does anybody know how this can happen?

Re: Poppies

Probably cross-pollination or hybrids reverted back to kind, or something else botanical!

Re: Poppies

This year I planted the red ones to commemorate WW1, then I got a bit carried away, some of them came out different to the pictures on the seed packets. I'm tying bits of wool the same colour as the flower onto each stem so I can keep the seeds separate & see what happens next year!

Re: Poppies

OH! They are gorgeous, I'm so jealous!! I LOVE the deep purple ones.
Mine just arrived uninvited, but I do love them.
Thank you for showing them to me.

Re: Poppies

I just can't get poppies to grow in my south facing garden. It gets lots of sun but they just won't grow, anyone got any idea what I might be doing wrong please ? Any tips would be appreciated. I'm not a gardener but I like to potter.

Re: Poppies

My border is southfacing but quite sheltered. I just mixed my seeds with compost & scattered them on top of what was compacted clay soil, it had chippings on it when I moved in 18mths or so ago. I just got fed up with it being sparsely planted with baby shrubs so I just threw them on. I think this shows, treat poppies like nature would, scatter seeds on top of soil & ignore! I found the red Danish flag (I think) didn't do so well, but have read recently that they like disturbed soil. Good luck!
