Hydrangea

Hi folks. I have a lovely lush green hydrangea, but for the third year running it does not seem to want to flower, even though it has been fed. It grows bigger each year and apart from no flowers seems very healthy.
So do you think some hydrangea's just don't flower?

Re: Hydrangea

Hello chattielaidee - I have several flowering like mad things but I never prune til spring, leaving the old flower heads on over winter protects the following years buds. If you already do this then hopefully someone may have some idea what the problem may be.

Re: Hydrangea

My hydrangea is an abundance of blooms this year...

I also leave the dead blooms on throughout the winter to protect new buds, usually do light pruning in early Spring.

A couple of years ago my neighbour gave me a miserable little thing she was going to throw away. It is covered in flowers this year.

Re: Hydrangea

Hydrangeas grow like weeds here and I have countless ones coming into flower now.
Sorry, don't know the answer to your question, though.

Re: Hydrangea

My Hydrangeas are over 35 years old they were in the garden when I bought the house but I think they are on their last legs; years of drought, hot summers and neglect have taken their toll.

This winter they are virtually just sticks with very little greenery

Some possibilities here; pruned at the wrong time, (so you have cut of this years growth!), pruned too hard, too much nitrogen in your soil or possibly it's meant for a different zone to where you live, meaning it's not so hardy to your local climate. stevmk2
