pruning forsythia

we've not lived here very long, and have inherited a large forsythia from the previous owners.

When should we prune it? It clearly needs a haircut as it's overgrown and didn't flower very much in the spring.

Thanks for your input!

Re: pruning forsythia

They flower on previous years growth so don't take too much of this years growth or they won't flower much at all.
I think they are supposed to be done just after flowering so might be best to leave until next year now.

Re: pruning forsythia

I usually cut mine back after flowering but due to 2 broken ribs couldn't this year. I've just cut it right back as otherwise I know by next year it will be out of control, I'll have some flowers next year but not expecting a good show.

I too cut mine back immediately after flowering then continue to take the tips off throughout the summer to keep it in shape.
Mine was a sad little specimen comprising of two twigs that I purchased for £1 when Woolworths was closing down, it is now about 5ft and a neat lollipop shape .

thanks for the advice. Think I might give the bush a haircut later today once the grass has dried up a bit - just so we can walk past it without having to duck!

If it was mine I think I would just cut it right back now, if really overgrown to get it in shape. You wouldn't get flowering next year but the year after it would be glorious.

I've done it! Cut it back from about 12 feet tall, and correspondingly wide, to around 6' x 6'. At least we can walk along the path now without getting slapped by overhanging branches!
