Tell me about it.

My commute was the best part of an hour each way, thanks to the congested motorway and roads.

I have been late a couple of times and have benefited occasionally by the school being closed due to snow, but I still think that we are being dictated to by a bunch of snowflakes.

That is without doubt true.

We are effectively being dictated to by an army of money-grabbing lawyers these days, supported by judges who seem to like criminals more than victims.

Re: Schools closing at the drop of a snowflake

My school never closed due to the snow. If there were no buses running, we knew we had to walk. I had to catch two buses to my school which was about two and a half miles away so it meant getting up earlier to walk all that way and get there as early as I could. Arriving frozen to the bone we were allowed to sit in our coats until we warmed up.

If it was still snowing in the afternoon, we were allowed to leave school an hour or so earlier .... I used to think it exciting walking to and from school in the snow

Re: Schools closing at the drop of a snowflake

It irritates me so much schools closing through bad weather on two counts - teachers who say 'they can't get in' (yea? everyone else manages to get to work) and 'keeping kids safe from falling' in the snow and ice.

For goodness sake, we did it all those years ago - tramped through freezing temperatures, snow, ice, smog (wearing our masks), and no way were schools closed or concerns for our 'safety'. Not even sure they salted the playgrounds in those days. The fun was sliding on the ice, you fell, you hurt, you got up and did it again.

One mother being interviewed on a news channel said 'I'm far happier knowing she's safe from falling at home'. I'm pretty sure she doesn't think like that when the child and all the other kids are out playing in it and enjoying themselves - and yes, falling.

What does worry me, is how many of those parents unable to go to work through lack of child care because the schools are closed, are front line workers in the NHS.

I agree with all Pesta says there.

I'm in stitches here reading these posts out loud, it's like Monty Python!!
We may well have 3 feet of snow or more which will last for months not days , but there are not deep deep snow drifts on the roads even the very minor country roads, they are all cleared by 7AM The school buses all run on time, kids walk to school . Our local school 220 pupils , not many, there are 8 school buses serve that school, and the 5 and 6 year olds may also have to come 7 or 8 miles to school. At age 15 All children will find they have to travel 20 miles to school, or find acommodation during the week.
U K children have become "Nesh" as my mother would say, mainly due to their over protective parents. they will never grow up normally , this can be seen now in many of todays 18-25 year olds
