Well of course! An old person dies of some completely unrelated cause, but the doctor feels he ought to mention that s/he had Covid.

It certainly doesn't mean that s/he died of it and may not even state that Covid was a contributory cause of the death.

That's because the person may have survived without the contribution of COVID - the third figure is an estimate based on previous years (pre-COVID) figures.

See ONS or similar for a fuller explanation.

Well I suppose it all depends on how the doctor's report is worded.

https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/

A further 7,540 confirmed cases in the UK were announced by the government on Wednesday.

That's a massive increase (40% increase on the 7-day average) and the figure takes us back to 25th February .....

Luckily Marge has just had her second vaccination today, so hopefully we're both now relatively safe, especially as we know how to behave.

Nobody's panicking ..... yet .....

The dead and the dying are only part of the pattern of a pandemic .....

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pandemic

A pandemic is an epidemic occurring on a scale that crosses international boundaries, usually affecting people on a worldwide scale. A disease or condition is not a pandemic merely because it is widespread or kills many people; it must also be infectious. For instance, cancer is responsible for many deaths but is not considered a pandemic because the disease is not contagious (i.e. easily transmittable) and not even simply infectious.

An epidemic the rapid spread of disease to a large number of people in a given population within a short period of time. For example, in meningococcal infections, an attack rate in excess of 15 cases per 100,000 people for two consecutive weeks is considered an epidemic.

An epidemic may be restricted to one location; however, if it spreads to other countries or continents and affects a substantial number of people, it may be termed a pandemic. The declaration of an epidemic usually requires a good understanding of a baseline rate of incidence; epidemics for certain diseases, such as influenza, are defined as reaching some defined increase in incidence above this baseline. A few cases of a very rare disease may be classified as an epidemic, while many cases of a common disease (such as the common cold) would not. An epidemic can cause enormous damage through financial and economic losses in addition to impaired health and loss of life.
