Armistice Day

Lets not forget this day.

Today in 1920...The Cenotaph in Whitehall is unveiled by King George V on Armistice Day. The Unknown Warrior, with Admirals, Marshals and Generals as pall-bearers, is taken by gun carriage to the Cenotaph on the way to Westminster Abbey where he will be laid to rest. The King lays a wreath on the gun carriage before unveiling the monument on the stroke of 11am. At the end of the Silence, he lays the first wreath on the new monument.

Re: Armistice Day

I think this photo of my granddaughter taken last year in one of the turrets of The Tower of London, looking out on to the poppies is so appropriate for today.

Re: Armistice Day

I am thinking of my family and the First World War.

My Granddad went with his 3 Brothers. He lost
Walter in April 1918 and he has his name on a memorial
in Belgium as they couldn't find his body.

My Granddad and his 2 other Brothers were gassed and
all suffered from gas lung till they died.
My other Granddad survived and was a hero a few times
at the Somme and Passchendaele Ypres.

Met them but were all gone by the time I was 6.

Bless all the ones who fought in both World Wars.

The General

"Good morning, good morning!" the General said
When we met him last week on our way to the line.
Now the soldiers he smiled at are most of 'em dead
And we're cursing his staff for incompetent swine.
"He's a cheery old card," grunted Harry to Jack
As the slogged up to Arras with rifle and pack.

But he did for them both with his plan of attack.

Re: Armistice Day

I remember my old grandfather was picking out shrapnel bits from his body till the day he died, he served in the WW1. never went to the 2nd but he and me granny wouldn't move out of their home which was right next to 2 big gas tanks in Middlesbrough that the Germans tried to bomb time and again.
