Re: Two-Way Family Favourites.

Hi,
Great idea for a thread... All very memorable.

'A White Sports Coat...' I can only recall the version by 'The King Brothers', which reached no: 6 in the charts. Terry Dene only got as far as no: 18. Both in 1957... ( This is according to the 'Virgin' book of british hit singles.
I had no idea that Marty Robbins had written the song.
If asked who had performed it, I would have suggested someone like Frankie Vaughan.
I was only 13 at the time...
Malc.

Only just found out that this one was written by Willie Nelson!

Re: Two-Way Family Favourites.

I used to live near Tommy Steele when he had a big house at Petersham, near Richmond-on-Thames, in the 70s.

If I got a seat upstairs on the bus, I got a bit of a sneaky view into his front garden, but never spotted him.

Right next door, also on the main road, was a small garage/petrol station...... a one-man band type, no pun intended.
It came up for sale, with development potential, so Tommy bought it, and kept it as a garage, to stop it being developed, as it would have then overlooked his property.

He's 82 now, and I've no idea where he is living. There's very little personal stuff on his wiki page, or any other.

I don't remember the programme although I have heard of it and I certainly know most of those great songs. Can someone explain what was 'two way' about it? Did people pick songs for servicemen and vice versa?

Yes, it was a way for soldiers' families to dedicate a song to a serviceman, and vice versa. It was originally called Forces Favourites, then Family Favourites, and then Two-Way Family Favourites.

You got to know the names of all the bases round the world, especially in Germany.

The presenters became household names, like Jean Metcalfe and Cliff Michelmore, Michael Aspel and Judith Chalmers.
