Recall petition

Another MP has been removed, this now looks likely to become a regular occurence for electorate to rid themselves of any who step out of line.

Re: Recall petition

About time too!

I wonder if there's any chance of this happening retrospectively, that would get rid of more than a few that have got away with just repaying fiddled money in the 'expenses' scandal.

Perhaps also if a new system was introduced, where it's 'one strike and you are out' and an MP is banned from ever holding public office again, that might just concentrate their minds on honesty. After all they are not on low salaries are they – £79,468 as of April 2019, plus the costs of running their office!

Many ordinary, honest hard-working people earn only half that or probably less.

Re: Recall petition

Never knew that MP's were unpaid until 1911. Performance related pay would be appropriate.

Now that's a good idea! Those who it is alleged just 'sign in' and then go home but still collect their £300 a day allowance would be rather short on funds wouldn't they!

AFAIK, MPs do not get an attendance allowance but peers do .....

Re: Recall petition

He told BBC Wales he had "no indication" the party would stop him from standing and claimed the two Tory leadership candidates, who he spoke to on the phone on Friday, had been "very supportive" of him.

Thanks Omah, I stand corrected on that. My confusion between Peers who do get a daily attendance allowance and MPs who do not may have been due to reading one report and then another much older reported proposal that MPs should also get an allowance:

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/pol...arliament.html

That move, way back in 2009, for an allowance to be introduced for MPs I believe, but apparently that was scrapped:

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/u...s-1672108.html

When I read reports, such as the one below from just four years' ago, it is another of the 'fiddles' that have been occurring and for someone who has worked hard for a living for 55 years it does rather 'grate', as I am sure it does with many who have done the same:

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/pol...-of-Lords.html

Another more up-to-date report shows a 1.8% (£5 a day / £25 a week) increase in the peer’s daily allowance, more of an increase than some working people get in their monthly pay probably:

https://www.express.co.uk/news/polit...ers-parliament

However, checking all this out has benefits for the ‘learning curve’. There are 800 peers and 650 MPs but strangely only seats for 427 MP’s in the House of Commons:
