Brucy, you must learn to read the posts properly?
I wrote sawmill manager, NOT, forest manger?
Obviously the mill manager has to liase closely with the forest
manager and has to understand the workings of a forest.
The forest managers l knew in SA worked for the government
forestry dept and their word was law in the forest and they also had
control of local farmers and forest dwellers to a large exrent!
I appreciate your info and photo's on the ozzy forestry system which
seems based on indigenous species and natural regrowth whereas
in SA the majority of forest has become plantations which has a
much faster turnaround of product! So there are differences in
tree species and hence methods and equipement? However, one
thing they never did was to leave a wildfire to burn!
Anyway thanks for the interesting info on ozzy forestry, !
Regards Assman!

So the actual cause is settled, what about the cause of the fire

Oh dear Assman, apparently you don't even understand what you wrote yourself . How can you expect anyone else to?

To remind you what you actually said:

Like our hurricanes, the pattern of an intensification of our natural disasters is going to have be be addressed - but most importantly, plans will need to ensure that there are people to carry them out. When New Orleans went under water in 2005, there were plans, notebooks, phones, and equipment - but all the emergency workers and volunteers had left town. Millions of dollars were wasted.

I will try again Brucy!
That lowly saw mill manager's opinion makes more sense to me
than any other opinion l have seen yet in the media and most of
what l have heard on this forum,(note the word MOST )
I see your much maligned PM has now admitted mistakes were made
in the handling of the fires, so you now have some hope of correcting
those mistakes in the future, if you dont know you made a mistake
you will never correct that mistake, would you agree to that??
The mistakes your PM alludes to were caused by previous mistakes
made dating back + -- 20 yrs ago in the way the forests and bush
were managed? None of this is the fault of the fire services, they
simply had to deal with the results of faulty forestry management
policy?
Laws and fines etc are fine as far as they go, but the main factor in
fire prevention is the forest housekeeping quality?
Another thing is the difference between forest and bush, bush is
usually the initial kindling for the forest fires, and as such it needs
clearing on a regular basis to prevent deadwood build up!
I can go on for quite a while on this subject but l think you have
enough to digest for now?
However l wish you all good luck out there it is heartbreaking to
see what you have done to paradise! And if you want anymore advice
on ANYTHING let me know?
Regards Donkeyman AKA Assman!
