Accepting their assertions (in 2016) does not guarantee that a 'European Army' might not be formed in the not too distant future.

The co-operation between armed forces of most European countries has been going on long before the creation of the European Union. Ever since 1945, in fact, under NATO.

It is NATO which has kept the peace, that the EU seems to claim, and without the support of the United States, a unified European Army would be incapable of resisting Russian aggression and invasion should that country decide to do so.
