Copper water pipes

I have just read this article - what's your opinion?

"Copper - which lines the pipes that carry drinking water to our homes - is a major cause of Alzheimer's disease. the metal accumulates in the brain, and eventually causes the type of brain damage that is a hallmark of the disease.
It interfere's with the brain's normal defence system, and gathers in the blood vessels that help feed the brain, eventually causing plaques that signify Alzheimer's.
Researchers at the University of Rochester medical Centre noted the pattern in laboratory mice that were given copper-enriched water for three months.
Our exposure to it could be controlled by eating fewer foods that also contain copper, such as red meats and shellfish."

Whatever next?

Re: Copper water pipes

I think aluminium saucepans and mercury fillings in teeth have also been suggested as causes of Alzheimer's. I have both
We seem to live in a world full of dangers.

We had copper pipes at home and aluminium saucepans, Dad lived with them most of his life to the age of 89 and his mind was as clear as a bell to the last. My stepmother had
Alzheimer's at the age of 60 as did her mother. I think that ones genes play a big part in Alzheimers.

Same here Meg. We can't avoid everything they say though.
Anyway, another time they will say they have got it all wrong and change their minds again!

Re: Copper water pipes

You can also, if possible, install a reverse osmosis filter. That will filter copper (among other) from the water.

Don't believe a word of it. Copper's not as bad as the lead pipes in places I lived in the UK. I seem to remember in some places (Glasgow comes to mind) you had to run the water for a minute before drinking it because the acidic or (was it alkaline?) water did make the lead leach into the water.

Copper is a thing of the past now anyway its all plastic pipe these days.

Re: Copper water pipes

I have mentioned before that I don't take any notice of what these reports say. You wouldn't eat, drink or move if you took notice of all these reports.
We are lucky we are here talking about it instead of being a person living in Syria or a child dying of dirty water somewhere in the World.
The Romans died of lead poisoning whilst going mad.
So I am happy in my dotage doing what I do and if I die I die. Happens
to us all eventually.

Re: Copper water pipes

Your water could have a 50-100 mile journey to reach your tap, of which the last 20 feet will be through copper, I often wonder how it makes the preceding many mile journey, through who knows what, in relative safety.

That may relate to 'modern' water pipes Bruce, but what of those that have been in place, 10, 20, 50, 100 + years??? The house in which my flat is situated is more than 170 years old!!!

Re: Copper water pipes

What about the plumbers who have installed copper pipe all their working lives?
Or the technicians who have 'dressed' small copper tube on pneumatic engineering? (like hubby did for 20 or more years?

Aluminium, red lead, white lead, steel, iron, ferrous alloys, copper, titanium, magnesium, tin, zinc, nickel...all dangerous if eaten
