Re: Expenses: The Scandal That Changed Britain
I watched this programme; much of it was factual, but towards the end the presenters made a couple of interesting points -
Three things have happened recently in fairly close succession -
MPs expenses scandal
Financial crisis
The absolute shambles that our useless and traitorous MPs have made of the EU Referendum result, and Brexit negotiations
The combined effect of these has been to destroy any kind of trust or respect in our MPs & Government
Well we all know that, though it was convenient to have them summarised
But they went on to make a further point
As others have pointed out on this forum, MPs are representatives, not delegates
This means that we elect them and trust them to act in the best interests of the people and the country; they are not there simply to follow orders
Generally this has worked passably well, with a bit of grumbling now & again, but nothing too serious
However, these events, especially Brexit, have shown, most MPs are simply looking after themselves
They asked for an opinion over EU membership and were given a clear majority decision, yet have done everything they can to reverse or subvert that decision - they have shown themselves to be unworthy of any trust
Strictly speaking they are entitled to make their own decisions, but their current performance shows utter contempt for the electorate and public opinion
Any kind of trust or respect has gone, and something needs to change
That is also something we know already; all the more damning as it was stated by the BBC
