Trouble was, in the smallish little town in which I spent my early years. there were plenty who found "reserved occupations" and managed to stay clear of most of it.
In such a small place, it was fairly easy for people to make assumptions about that.
One big memory, for me, was my quiet, unassuming mother who was told, by a local person, that she ought to keep better control of her kids as they were becoming hooligans.
Her reply was that she was working all day, and late into the evening, and neither she, nor my father - who was away in the RN, "could spend the same amount of time running the family as he seemed to be able to".
There was quite a bit of revulsion for those who had been in a job and who suddenly switched to being called a farm labourer, etc.
