We don't eat horses or dogs, or even pigeons though do we, here in Britain.

Anyway, I am not going to get in an argument about it, if I want to buy two different colour poppies, then I will - and do!

Lots of pubs/restaurants round here serve pigeon, Tiffany. Never fancied them myself but often seen them on menus.

In our house we certainly DO eat pigeon! We also bring horse meat back when we visit France.

I think that a purple poppy in remembrance of animals during past conflicts is a good idea. I would certainly have paid extra for one.

The one colour I object to being sold alongside the poppy is the White poppy, a symbol of Pacifism, (war being unjust and should be settled by peaceful means). Tell that to that madman Hitler and his quest for world domination. Tell that to the families of men and women who spilled their blood fighting for the freedom of this country and the rest of Europe.

I think Pacifists should have their own day and keep away from the distribution and sanctity of the red (and purple) poppy and their meaning. Just my personal opinion.

Shropshiregirl - while I understand and respect your point of view about the white poppies - I would just like to mention that a lot of pacifists/conscientious objectors did sterling work during the wars - driving ambulances, nursing, doing forces admin jobs to release others to fight, catering etc.,

Many of them were also killed in both wars - irrespective of whether they agreed with it or not.

Trouble was, in the smallish little town in which I spent my early years. there were plenty who found "reserved occupations" and managed to stay clear of most of it.

In such a small place, it was fairly easy for people to make assumptions about that.

One big memory, for me, was my quiet, unassuming mother who was told, by a local person, that she ought to keep better control of her kids as they were becoming hooligans.

Her reply was that she was working all day, and late into the evening, and neither she, nor my father - who was away in the RN, "could spend the same amount of time running the family as he seemed to be able to".

There was quite a bit of revulsion for those who had been in a job and who suddenly switched to being called a farm labourer, etc.
