An Uncle

My uncle, Dennis Woolsey, had a stroke when he was 80. He had to have professional care afterwards but we visited him in the care home at least once a week. He had always been a motor mechanic all his life and one day I took him for a drive in the country on a lovely day, in his own Hillman Hunter, bought us an ice cream, had to mop his face afterwards and as I did I realised our positions had been reversed when I was 3 years old! As I drove he tried to say something to me but I couldn't understand him while I was driving but when we got back to the rest home and I could concentrate as he pointed to the front of the car he was saying "The timings out". Ever the mechanic.

Re: An Uncle

Oh Ciderz, that has brought a tear to my eye. As you know my Uncle has the same.
But I made him smile yesterday. X
Bless you for the story. X

Re: An Uncle

Dennis never married but was a lovely uncle and grand uncle to my kids. My daughter, Lucy, wrote this for him after he died in 2004.

Sleep my dear uncle,
Follow the angels before you.
Unpack your suitcase for the last time.
You are home.
Your voice will flow, like it did once before,
Without restriction.
Your hands, no longer frail,
You can paint your model trains,
You are released of your suffering,
Free again to laugh.
Forever I will remember
Waiting for your little yellow car to appear,
My heart filled with excitement,
On Christmas Eve,
It’s boot filled with giant presents.
Christmas will never be complete without you.
I will miss you Christmas Uncle,
But we will meet again,
And I will once again hold your hand
But this time I will not let go.
Sleep my dear uncle
My love for you is eternal.
Lucy

Re: An Uncle

sorry about your uncles stroke but what your opening post and the poem also brought a tear to my eye, how very poignant
