Yes, that's exactly what I did with an old hard disc drive. Opened the case and smashed each of the discs.
I seem to remember I couldn't remove the screws, so I had the break open the case.

Never throw an old computer away with the hard drive still in it. If need be, do searches on google on how to open up computers, there are loads of help sites and videos.

Never throw a hard drive away until you've smashed it to pieces with a big hammer.

I can't seem to bring myself to smash up this precision item, which is why I still have all nearly all of my old hard drives.

That's just how I feel Mart, after spending a lifetime as a mechanical engineer building and repairing stuff, it just doesn't seem right to be disrespectful and aggressive to a machine.....

I also have a stack of hard drives from previous PCs, and also external enclosures. That I used to use. I say ‘used’ as I no longer use the desktop. I mainly use an iPad and I have a laptop.
Yes I agree with the rest. Remove the hard drive and a hammer job. You Could even open the HD to expose the disk. But put a cloth over the disk when doing a hammer job as they splinter.

Easy to use as an external drive using a SATA/ usb cable and maybe a power supply.

Probably because of my job too. Video recorders were miniature electronic-mechanical items.
