A posh garden behind me, used to have a huge Walnut tree, so you can imagine I was over run with squirrels in autumn as they would be up there pinching the Walnuts.

I know some find them amusing, but they were a real nuisance here, because they would raid my bird tables throwing the food everywhere, and they used to dig all my tubs out early every morning, to hide the nuts they'd been pinching.
Every day I swept all the compost up and put it back round the plants, only to find that next day they'd done it again . . and again . . and again!

My Izzy, who I lost at the end of February used to go mad when they ran along the fence top. Now Iz has gone, they take liberties!
I can understand how that must have been annoying for you Mups, I would hate my tubs being dug about like that.

I suppose I find them fascinating because I rarely see a squirrel here.

Re: Garden visitor

I had lots of them around in my last house...the lady next door had a humane trap and she claimed to have caught 90 one year and rehomed them a few miles away...I'm sure they made it back home before she did.

Re: Garden visitor

Just so every one knows - it is perfectly legal for us in the UK to kill grey squirrels as long as it's done humanely. In other words, you can't drown, asphyxiate or strangle one but you can clump one over the head with a single blow using a hammer, for example, or use an air rifle (but you have to be licenced to do this and guarantee a clean "kill shot"). You could, of course, always put the animal in a sack, take it to your local vet and pay him to euthanase it.

I was so pleased but will have to dig it up and put it in a big pot so I can find it a new home because it's too big for my garden!
we have one in a pot.

Re: Garden visitor

I have not seen squirrels since moving here six years ago - but since this thread appeared, i have seen two (one of them in the garden).
