The letter of the law has to be the yardstick.

Re: Jury Service

Presumption, and prejudice seems to be rife, if the process protects one in a hundred, so be it.

Re: Jury Service

Making the right decision on guilty or not Is not easy.. One does think have I done right. When previous offences are read out if any and you have decided guilty ,then your decision Is justified

Are you accusing me of being presumptuous or prejudiced?

Re: Jury Service

All I can say is I did find it interesting on the 3 cases i sat on.

Case 1
Two men were conning priests and vicars out of money pleading they were so poor etc.

Guilty

they admitted 32 previous similar offences to the one they were charged with.
They had to pay back all the money they obtained and given 6 months suspended sentence

Case 2

Business partners , One was having an affair with the others wife and stole her valuable jewellery. So the case was one of theft.(several £1,000 involved)

Guilty (got 3 month prison sentence)

later police recovered the items from a pawn brokers he told them where had had disposed of the jewels to reduce his term of imprisonment

Case 3

Young lad (now don't laugh as this is true) was outside the ****** dance hall pretending to be a hire car (reliant 3 wheeler)
Young girl got in and he took her to the banks of the Thames and had sex with her. Lot more to this case but too long to write down on here.

Police called and he was arrested

Not guilty

Apparently she, so it was said by the defence council, was partly encouraging him ,and her evidence in court was shaky to say the least. I managed to chat to the police officer afterwards. Seems he had done this to a previous girl and her handbag was still in his car.
She didn't want to bring charges against him

The police were now out to really get him ,he told me.

So Sweetie Pie it can be worrying but also interesting. after a ase there is nothing stopping you talking to the arresting police officers to get their thoughts on it.

I asked this officer about Case 3 and how he felt about it .
He said it was their job to get an accused to court, and give evidence. There it ended as far as the police were concerned they had done their job
