We here in Oz used to call all women.. married or single..
shielas. I recall my grandfathers always using the term. Not sure whether the term came from a female name or the female name came from our colloquialism. I expect the former.
Yes the former. Just looked up the name Shiela. It is Irish derived. Perhaps the colloquialism originated from the many Irish that settled in Australia in the 19th century.
